(Why not Ed Fulton as a candidate from near by Danville, Virginia?)
We don’t have a new baseball coach at UNCG yet……Names have been tossed about more times than the ball was, at the UNCG home games this past season……We have a new name to be adding to the list in here today….Why not Ed Fulton????? Add Ed’s name to list of potential candidates….He has a strong background with Florida State playing experience(should catch AD Kim Record’s eye), he has minor league experience and a real stout DIII background at Averett University up in Danville, Virginia……
Salary should not be a huge issue with Ed at UNCG, or even at a school like Appalachian State…..He’s a local successful DIII coach with minor league experience, he’s from Florida State University, plus he has a good track record and all of that should be attractive…….
So here he is and let’s add Ed’s name to the list….

Ed Fulton has been Averett’s baseball coach since 1996, when he took over a program that had completed only one varsity season. In 16 seasons at Averett, Fulton’s teams have won more than 300 games and a USA South Conference championship.
Fulton has guided his team to nine 20-plus win seasons including three in a row. In 2012, he led his team to a 26-18 record after going 22-19 and 25-17 the previous two seasons.
Over the past 10 seasons the Cougars have posted a 276-245-1 record under Fulton’s direction, including a 2003 USA South Conference Tournament championship and a 2007 team that went 31-12. The 2003 championship team he built is a far cry from the 10-24 season he endured his first year on the job in 1997.
In 2003, Averett finished tied for third in the league with a 6-6 record. However, Fulton guided his fourth seeded Cougars to five wins in six games en route to his first USA South Conference Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional in Hickory, N.C. The Cougars posted a 27-14 overall record that season against one of the toughest schedules in the country.
The late season run also lifted Averett to their first top-10 national ranking (seventh) in the program’s history. Fulton’s squad was also considered the top team in the region following the tournament championship.
Well versed in all aspects of the game, Fulton’s specialties are no doubt in the areas of hitting and catching. Averett held a team batting average of .322 and averaged 7.5 runs per game in 2003. If you also consider that 6.5 of those runs per game were earned runs, then Fulton’s credibility as a hitting coach becomes very apparent.
Behind the plate, Fulton is arguably one of the best teachers in the nation. He helped develop Greg Stevens into one of the best catchers in the south region and into a current professional ballplayer. In addition to Stevens, Fulton has also coached pitcher Gene Yost, a 20th round selection by the Nationals in 2004, and outfielder Eddie Guessford, as well as countless others, to successful professional careers. Due to his professional background, Fulton has made many contacts with professional players, scouts, coaches and managers.
Before bringing the Cougars to national prominence, Fulton spent nine years in the minor leagues, six of those seasons at the AAA level. The St. Louis Cardinals picked him in the 16th round during the 1987 draft. Fulton’s professional career included stints with the Cardinals, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox.
Fulton played collegiate baseball at Florida State University under legendary coach Mike Martin, where the Seminoles won 230 games during his college career. He helped guide FSU to berths in the College World Series in 1986 and 1987. In 1986, Fulton was selected to the USA National Team and earned All-America honors in 1987.
A native of Danville, Va., Fulton earned his bachelor’s degree from Averett in 1998. He and his wife, Christie, reside in Danville. The couple has three children: Justin, Kenna and Camden

Speaking of coaching positions, has a Grimsley coach been named yet?
Still no new baseball coach at Grimsley and still no new basketball coach at Grimsley…..
Has anybody heard if the 5 players they signed are staying or if they are going elsewhere. The Dishmond kid Gaski stated as a pitcher only can crush the ball and hits for a pretty high average. I saw him hit 2 bombs well over 400′ and heard that he has hit 12 in a 26 game legion and playoff season so far. Also read he is 10 for 13 in 3 playoff games. Interested in seeing who is hired and successful season ahead. I think he is the only NC kid they signed.
As I have said from the beginning I think Grimsley knows who the next coach is…they just have not officially announced it yet.
No offense to Ed Fulton or Averett but there is probably a reason he has been there since 1996. Do you not think he would have tried to move up in the coaching ranks before this? Just saying someone who played at FSU and is coaching usually does not sit at a DIII school for 20 years then all of a sudden want to move up to a small DI school. Maybe he does but just does not seem right. He probably loves coaching without all of the BS involved and is comfortable where he is. Atleast thats the only thing that makes sense. Seems like good coach just not right fit for Greensboro.
