High Point Announces 2012-13 Men’s Basketball Schedule

The High Point University men’s basketball team will open the 2012-13 season with its first matchup against UNC Greensboro in nine years as part of the Panthers’ schedule announced by head coach Scott Cherry on Thursday. HPU’s non-conference home slate also includes William & Mary, Western Michigan and Eastern Kentucky.

“We have put together a balanced, but challenging schedule for this upcoming year,” said Cherry. “From the first day as head coach, I promised quality home games in the Millis Center for our fans and I believe we have done that again this year. Our opening night game versus UNC Greensboro, a local area school from the Southern Conference, gives our community something to get excited about right away. In addition, we have games at home against William and Mary from the CAA, Western Michigan from the MAC and Eastern Kentucky from the OVC. We are thrilled to have these teams in our building before we play all our Big South rivals after New Year’s.

“Our non-conference road games also will prepare us for a very competitive Big South conference race. With opponents like Wake Forest, Appalachian State, Indiana State and UT Chattanooga, we will be put to the test in some hostile environments. We are very excited about the 2012-13 season and look forward to seeing everybody in the Millis Center.”

The Panthers host former Div. II rival Mars Hill for an exhibition game on Nov. 3 before hosting UNC Greensboro to open the regular season on Nov. 9. The last time the two teams played was Dec. 13, 2003, an 85-72 HPU win. The Panthers then travel to Appalachian State for a Nov. 13 matchup in Boone, N.C. HPU’s non-conference home games include William & Mary (Nov. 17), St. Andrews Presbyterian (Nov. 21), Johnson & Wales (Dec. 2), Western Michigan (Dec. 16) and Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 21).

Besides App. State, road games include Indiana State (Nov. 25), Western Michigan (Nov. 29) and Wake Forest (Dec. 5). HPU plays in the Dr. Pepper Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn., Dec. 28-29. The Panthers take on Chattanooga at 7 p.m. on the 28th and play either Austin Peay or Utah Valley State the next day.

High Point opens its conference slate with road games at Winthrop on Jan. 5 and at Radford on Jan. 9. The Panthers then host Gardner-Webb and Liberty the next week. HPU finishes off the Big South schedule with home games against Radford and Campbell on Feb. 27 and March 2, respectively.

This year, the Big South will be split into two divisions for men’s basketball. The Panthers will be in a division with Campbell, Liberty, Longwood, Radford and VMI and will play each of those teams twice. HPU will play each team in the other division once: Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville and Winthrop.

The league features a combined men’s and women’s tournament with all games hosted by Coastal Carolina at its new arena in Conway, S.C., March 5-10. The men’s first round will be March 5 followed by quarterfinals on March 7, semifinals on March 9 and the championship game on March 10. The winner advances to the NCAA Tournament, which begins March 19.
