High Point University picks up basketball player that has had serious heart ailments/condition/issues

HIGH POINT – High Point University is giving a once highly-touted player a chance to complete his men’s basketball career despite medical issues.

HPU spokesman Jon Litchfield confirmed Thursday that coach Scott Cherry has added Allan Chaney, a 6-9 forward who was a top-100 prospect when he entered Florida in the fall of 2008, transferred to Virginia Tech after the 2008-09 season and has been sidelined since collapsing because of a heart condition during a workout in the spring of 2010.

Doctors diagnosed Cheney’s condition as viral myocarditis and discovered that it had caused scarring, Virginia Tech decided last August that it would never clear Chaney to play again for the Hokies. While still working toward graduation, he continued his effort to play again. He had a back-up defibrillator installed last winter, and after doctors were still able to induce arrhythmias much easier than to their liking, he underwent a procedure during which the damaged tissue around his heart was frozen.

Chaney’s cardiologist at the University of Pennsylvania cleared Chaney to play in May. Litchfield said that Chaney was also cleared by HPU’s trainer and a local cardiologist.

Chaney got his undergraduate degree in May will be able to play immediately at HPU because he is a graduate student academically….
