Greensboro College Women’s Soccer Opens Season With Overtime Win Over Hood

Allison Gibson netted the game winning goal 3:15 into the first overtime to lift The Pride women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Hood in the season opener at the Marymount Tournament. Greensboro dominated control of the game, outshooting the Blazers 24-8 and 12-4 on goal.

The Pride kicked off the scoring at the 17:13 mark in the first half when Melanie Raton headed in a corner by Sarah Hopkins for the first goal of her collegiate career. Greensboro racked up a 10-2 shot advantage in the first half but could not pad the lead heading into the break.

Hood answered in the second half, as Jessie Herbert intercepted a pass and beat Pride keeper Shireen Unvala for a breakaway goal to even the score at 1-1 at the 69:19 point.

Despite holding a 12-6 advantage in shots in the second half, Greensboro was unable to beat the keeper, sending the game into extra sessions tied at 1-1.

It did not take long for The Pride to break through in overtime, as Hopkins notched her second assist, allowing Gibson to break away for the game winning goal.

In addition to outshooting the Blazers, Greensboro held a 6-2 advantage on corner opportunities with one successful conversion.

Gibson led The Pride with seven total shots and tied Meredith Kelly for a game high three shots on goal. In goal, Unvala made three saves in a little over 93 minutes of play.

Greensboro is 1-0 with the victory and will look to stay perfect against host Marymount on Saturday at 12 p.m.
