College Volleyball Finals – Guilford 3, Methodist 2; Hollins 3, Guilford 0

DANVILLE, Va. – Guilford College’s volleyball team concluded play at the Averett University Cougar Classic Sunday. The Quakers rallied for a 3-2 win over Methodist University in their opening match, but fell to Hollins University, 3-0, in their second and final match of the day.

In Sunday’s opener, Guilford (1-3) overcame a 2-0 deficit for its first win of the season. The Monarchs won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-20, before the Quakers came back to win 25-19, 25-23 and 15-13 in the decisive fifth set. Freshman hitter Keley Ruehling put away a team-high 16 kills and teammate Malikah French added 12. Freshman Aly Haslam had a career-high 10 kills. Junior Taylor Whitley contributed 40 assists and rookie Brooke Herr picked up 23 digs.

With no time to rest before moving to their next match, the weary Quakers fell to a fresher Hollins club playing its first match of the day, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18. Ruehling led Guilford with 12 kills and French chipped in with six putaways. Whitley finished with 23 assists and Herr added 10 digs.

Coach Emily Gann’s club hosts Ferrum College Wednesday (9/5) at 7:00 p.m. in the Quakers’ home opener.
