Elon’s Chris Thomas Named SoCon Men’s Soccer Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon University men’s soccer senior forward Chris Thomas has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced today.

Thomas scored four goals this past weekend at the Hyatt Place Select Invitational at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., leading the maroon and gold to two wins. Thomas is currently tied with three other players for the most goals in the nation with six. Thomas’ 14 total points tie Cornell’s Daniel Haber and Old Dominion’s Tim Hopkinson for the most in the country as well.

Thomas scored twice in Elon’s 3-2 victory over the Lipscomb Bisons on Friday night, Sept. 7 before netting two more in the Phoenix’s 4-2 victory over Belmont on Sunday, Sept. 9.

Thomas is the conference’s active career leader in goals with 36 and ranks second on Elon’s all-time chart, trailing only Mike Wessels’ (1985-89) career mark of 43 goals.

The Phoenix men’s soccer team returns to action on Friday night, Sept. 14, in Conway, S.C., versus No. 19 ranked Coastal Carolina. It marks the first meeting between the two teams since the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament.
