High Point Volleyball Drops Match to Green Bay

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Jamie McDonald tied her career high with 11 kills in the High Point University volleyball team’s 3-0 loss to Green Bay on Saturday. The Panthers are 1-1 in the Wildcat Classic hosted by Davidson. They will face NCCU at 3 p.m. in the final match of the tournament.

“Green Bay is a good team,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “Obviously we struggled with their consistency but it is a learning experience for our team. We need to learn how to be consistent and focused every single time we play.”

McDonald hit .647 with 11 kills to lead the Panthers. She also had four blocks. Senior Courtney Johnk tallied 10 kills and a .409 attack percentage. Sophomore Chelsea Davis led the team with 14 digs.

Green Bay won the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-20. The Phoenix broke a 23-23 tie in the first set with a kill from Leah Van Zeeland and won the set on a block. Johnk had six of High Point’s 14 kills in the first frame.

In the second set Green Bay used an early five-point cushion, 11-6, to hold off a late run by the Panthers. High Point would cut the lead to three, 23-20 and again the Phoenix would score the final two points of the set, both on kills by Van Zeeland.

The Phoenix had all the momentum in the final set, rolling to a 25-17 win. High Point was outhit .317 to .103 in the third frame.

High Point drops to 9-5 this season while Green Bay moves to 6-5.

In the final game of the Wildcat Classic, High Point will face North Carolina Central. First serve is schedule for 3 p.m.
