College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 3, Ferrum 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matthew Poling’s multi-point effort boosted Guilford College to a 3-1 men’s soccer win over Ferrum College Wednesday night. The Quakers (4-3) earned their third straight home win in as many tries on Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center.

Poling’s third goal of the season came off a rebound of his own shot in the 11th minute to give the Quakers an early 1-0 lead. Just before the end of the first half, Guilford’s Ronnie Castellanos (San Pedro Sula, Honduras / North Forsyth (N.C.)) forced a turnover in the midfield, creating a breakaway to the goal to double Quakers’ advantage.

The Panthers countered in the 52nd minute as Eddy Funes received short cross from Asa Fox to put the Panthers on the board. In the 63rd minute, Freddy Gomez (Valparaiso, Chile / Burlington Williams (N.C.)) netted his fourth goal of the season on back pass from Poling near the side of the goal, which gave the Quakers a 3-1 lead.

Guilford outshot the Panthers, 18-11. Michael MacVane made six saves in net for the Quakers while the Panthers’ Justin Robinson stopped seven shots.

The Quakers return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday when Guilford travels to Harrisonburg, Va., to face Eastern Mennonite University.
