College Men’s Soccer Final – Roanoke 2, Guilford 1

SALEM, Va. – A.J. Tierce’s penalty kick goal in the 68th minute broke a 1-1 tie and sent Roanoke College to a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer win over visiting Guilford College Tuesday night. The goal marked Tierce’s team-leading fourth of the season and his third game-winning goal.

The Maroons (4-3, 2-1 ODAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Mark Strelow score in the 31st minute. Strelow collected the rebound of a Carl Leist shot that was stopped by Guilford goalie Michael MacVane. Strelow put the ball into the right side of the goal and Roanoke carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Guilford (4-5, 1-2 ODAC) got on the board thanks to Freddy Gomez’s team-leading fifth score of the year. He converted a penalty kick a little over 12 minutes into the second half, which knotted the score at 1-1.

The Maroons held a 16-12 edge in shots, but Guilford had nine of the game’s 15 corner kicks. MacVane finished with nine saves in goal while his counterpart, Cole Sinclair, made four stops, all in the first half.

The Quakers are back in action Saturday (9/29) at noon when they host Shenandoah University in an ODAC match on Guilford’s Homecoming.
