College Golf Results – Guilford Golfers Place Sixth at Gordin Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Guilford College’s golf team opened with a sixth-place finish at the 12-team Gordin Classic Tuesday at the Columbus Country Club. The Quakers shot 304 in Tuesday’s third and final round and finished at 301-292-304-897.

The Gordin is an annual event comprised largely of the top finishers from the previous year’s NCAA Division III Championships. Second-round leader Wittenberg University shot 290 Tuesday and finished with a 293-285-290-868, two strokes better than second-place Methodist University (870), which fired a final-round 287, the day’s low score. Defending NCAA Division III national champion Oglethorpe University (879) took third, followed by Illinois Wesleyan University (888) and Emory University (889).

Guilford sophomore Nick Shedd (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) paced the Quakers with a ninth-place finish in the 60-man field. He shot a one-over-par 73 Tuesday and finished with a 218 for the tournament. Senior Noah Ratner checked in with a 74 and climbed six spots into 16th place at 223. Guilford sophomore Drew Thompson shot 74-73-79-226 and shared 25th place in the field. Sophomore Henry Smith shot 235 to place 53rd in his varsity debut and scored for the Quakers in two of his three rounds. Mitch Robinette (Charlotte, N.C./Grace Academy) came in 56th with a 76-79-85-240.

Wittenberg’s Alex Andrews shot 72 Tuesday and earned medalist honors with a 71-69-72-212. He started the round tied with Illinois Wesleyan’s Stefan Johnson, but Johnson shot 74 in the final round and finished fourth (71-69-74-214). Methodist’s Jeff Wills and Oglethorpe’s Anthony Maccaglia finished one stroke off the lead at 213.

Coach Corey Maggard’s Quakers, ranked fifth in the current Golf World/GCAA Division III Poll, hit the links again this weekend (10/6-10/7) at the Ted Keller Invitational in Glen Allen, Va.
