College Men’s Soccer Final: Guilford 4, Emory & Henry 1

GREENSBORO, N.C.–Freddy Gomez (Valparaiso, Chile/Williams (N.C.)) climbed to a tie for second among Guilford College’s all-time career goal scorers in a 4-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer win over Emory & Henry College.

Gomez put the Quakers on the board in the 26th minute when a quick through ball from Ronnie Castellanos (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/North Forsyth (N.C.)) found Gomez in the middle of the box. Seven minutes later, Chad Gunton (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek) set-up Erik Collazo (Greensboro, N.C./Southwest Guilford) at the top of the box off the Gunton throw-in.

In the 50th minute, Gomez struck again as Gunton fed Gomez a long outlet pass to give the Quakers a 3-0 lead. The goal was Gomez’s ninth of the season and 39th of his career, putting Gomez in a tie with Chris Jenkins for second among Guilford’s all-time leading goal scorers.

The Wasps countered in the 67th minute when Jesus Mendoza booted in a rebound off the post from Will Bodfish to put Emory & Henry on the board. In the 87th minute, the Quakers’ Drew Gunter (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) blasted a ball through a wall of defenders on a Corey McDonough corner kick to give the Quakers a 4-1 advantage.

The Quakers outshot the Wasps 23-10. Michael MacVane made one save for the Quakers in the first half before being relieved in the second half by Marko Mandalinic, who made three saves. Tim Coulter made ten saves in net for the Wasps.

The Quakers (6-5, 3-2 ODAC) begin a stretch of two games on road Sunday (10/7) when Guilford travels to ODAC rival Bridgewater College.
