Allan Chaney Ggranted Sixth Year of NCAA Eligibility at High Point University

High Point University forward Allan Chaney has been granted a sixth season of eligibility in men’s basketball by the NCAA. The University was informed of the NCAA’s decision on Thursday afternoon. Chaney joined HPU as a graduate student and previously attended Virginia Tech and the University of Florida.

On Wednesday, High Point University was informed that Chaney received relief from the one-time-transfer exception rule. That made Chaney immediately eligible to play for HPU this season.

On Thursday, the NCAA informed the University that Chaney was granted an extension of eligibility, meaning he will also be able to play for High Point in 2013-14. NCAA Div. I athletes typically have five years to complete four seasons of eligibility in a sport. However, due to Chaney’s medical hardships throughout the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, the NCAA granted him a sixth year to use his eligibility.

Chaney graduated from Virginia Tech in 2012 with a degree in apparel, housing and resource management. He is currently enrolled in HPU’s Norcross Graduate School and is pursuing a master’s in nonprofit management.

A 6-foot-9, 235-pound forward, Chaney was ranked by ESPN as the No. 64 player in the high school class of 2008. Originally from Baltimore, Md., he played high school basketball at New London High School in Connecticut, where he averaged 26.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game as a senior. He received a 95 rating by ESPN and was rated a four-star recruit by both Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Chaney attended the University of Florida in 2008-09 and posted averages of 9.8 minutes, 3.0 points, 2.1 rebounds in 23 games (two starts). He then transferred to Virginia Tech and sat out the 2009-10 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He experienced heart issues in 2010 and missed the following two seasons before being medically cleared to play in May 2012.

High Point University added seven newcomers and has eight returners for the 2012-13 season, which is Cherry’s fourth as head coach. The Panthers were picked No. 3 in the North Division of the Big South Conference in the preseason poll released last week.
