HPU Men’s Golf Tied For 13th At The Kiawah Classic After Two Rounds

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team is tied for 13th out of 26 teams at the Wendy’s Kiawah Classic with a total score of 609 after firing a combined 309 in the second round on Monday in Kiawahs Island, S.C. Sophomore Charles Valluzzo had the low round of the day for HPU with a 76.

“We didn’t play our best golf but there were definitely some good things to take out of today,” head coach Greg Flesher said. “Charles had 16 great holes and just two real bad ones so I don’t feel his score was a good indicator of his level of play. As a group we need to work to get off to a better start and to play consistent golf over 18 holes. That being said, the conditions have been absolutely brutal with the wind gusting up to 30 miles per hour. It was hard for almost anyone to post a great score.”

Valluzzo had three birdies on Monday to finish five-over for the round. He is currently tied for 20th with a two-day total of 147 (71-76). Senior Chase Wilson finished one-stroke back of Valluzzo on the day, firing a six-over 77. He is in a tie for 34th with a 36-hole score of 149 (72-77).

Senior Brian Sullivan was the lone HPU golfer to shave strokes off his first-round score, shooting a 77 for the round and finishing the day in a tie for 71st with a total score of 156 (79-77). Freshman McKay Tye struggled on the front nine but recovered to shoot even par on the back nine and finish with a 79 on the day. He is currently tied for 78th with a total score of 157 (78-79). Sophomore Sam Stewart rounds out the HPU five after carding an 80 on the day to finish in a tie for 92nd with a two-day score of 159 (79-80).

South Carolina remains in first place in the team standings with a total combined score of 575 after shooting a combined 293 in the second round. The College of Charleston shot a 292 on the day and moved into second place, seven strokes back of the Gamecocks with a total of 582. Wisconsin (587), Winthrop (589) and Western Kentucky (594) all remain within striking distance.

Stetson’s Dustin Dingus had the low round of the day with a 69 to move into first place among individuals with a 36-hole score of 141. He leads by one stroke over a trio of players comprised of Zach Munroe from The College of Charleston and Matthew NeSmith and Caleb Sturgeon from South Carolina.

High Point play the third and final round of the Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Club on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The Panthers will tee-off beginning at 11:30 a.m., from the first hole.
