NCHSAA State Dual Team Girl’s Tennis State Championship Advance

BURLINGTON – The 23rd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships in women’s dual team tennis will be held Saturday with four finals to be contested at the Burlington Tennis Center.

The 1-A and 4-A state finals will start at 9:30 Saturday morning with the 2-A and 3-A matches starting at 12:30 p.m.

In one of the 9:30 am openers, Raleigh Broughton makes its third straight trip to the 4-A championship and an NCHSAA-record 15th overall as the Caps (23-0) face Greensboro Grimsley (16-3). Broughton knocked off Cary Green Hope 5-1 on Thursday in the East Regional final to earn the berth. Grimsley is the defending state champion as the Whirlies beat Broughton 5-4 in last year’s final.

Maggie Kane of Raleigh Broughton earned the state 4-A singles championship last weekend, while the Caps doubles team of Adrienne Overcash and Kara Summerford was the state runners-up.

The 1-A championship at 9:30 am is a rematch of the teams that have met for the last two titles, sending Durham’s North Carolina School of Science and Math (15-3) against defending champion Mount Airy (21-2). Mount Airy downed NCSSM 5-2 for the state title in 2011, and Science and Math won the title by the identical score in ’10.

Mount Airy eliminated unbeaten Misenheimer Gray Stone Day 5-0 in another weather-delayed Thursday regional final. NCSSM is 3-1 in previous women’s dual team championships and is in the title match for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

NCHSAA state 1-A singles runner-up Jordan Jackson leads Mount Airy, while the doubles team of Davi Barbour and Haley Thomas finished second in the state doubles competition.

Salisbury (20-2) is seeking its fifth consecutive dual team tennis championship and is in the finals for the 12th time, with an 8-3 in previous title matches. The Hornets battle Greene Central (20-8) in a 12:30 p.m. 2-A final. Greene Central is in its 11th state title appearance and its two previous titles, in 2005 and ’07, both came with wins over Salisbury.

The other 12:30 match has Charlotte Catholic (20-6) taking on unbeaten Nash Central (19-0) for the 3-A crown. Nash Central defeated defending state champion Cardinal Gibbons 5-1 on Thursday to advance to the championship. Catholic lost in last year’s championship to Cardinal Gibbons but won the title in 2009 and ’10 and is a stellar 9-1 in previous finals. The Cougars are making their fourth trip to the championships in the last five seasons.
