Guilford Cross Country: Goncarovs, Norton to Race at the NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championship

HAMPTON, Ga. – Guilford College’s junior standouts Andris Goncarovs (Ithaca, N.Y./Lambert Alternative Community School (SUNY Buffalo)) and Chad Norton (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake) qualified for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships with their eight-kilometer finishes Saturday at the South/Southeast Regionals hosted by Emory University.

Goncarovs finished third in the 160-man field at Nash Farm Battlefield Park when he crossed the finish line in 25 minutes, 46.53 seconds. The time represents his second-best this season and the eight-best in Guilford history. Norton took 11thplace with his time of 26 minutes, 23.84 seconds, his second-best this season. David Cason also finished in the top-20 (26:47.09). Cason’s time represents his second-best finish of the season and third-best of his career. Goncarovs, Norton and Cason earned All-South/Southeast Region Team recognition with their finishes.

Matthew McKeown finished in 32 minutes, 45.37 seconds. Joshua Farrar finished five seconds later (32:50.91), which represents his career second-best. Patrick Westervelt ran his career-best finish (33:23.11) to round out Guilford’s scoring, helping the team finish 12th out of 23 teams overall.

Lynchburg College finished first with four top-10 finishes. Bridgewater College also represented the Old Dominion Athletic Conference well, taking the third spot.

The NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships will take place next Saturday, Nov. 17, at LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Ind. at 11:00 a.m.
