College Men’s Basketball Results – Guilford Wins Daly Seven Hotels Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. –Josh Pittman pumped in 18 points in Guilford College’s 93-56 men’s basketball win over William Peace University Saturday in the final of the Daly Seven Hotels Invitational. Pittman earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors for his 33 points in the Quakers’ two victories.
Southern Virginia University claimed the consolation contest earlier Saturday, 86-56, over Johnson & Wales (N.C.) University.

The host Quakers (2-0) scored the game’s first 10 points and raced to a 50-23 halftime lead over the first-year Pacers (1-1). Peace overcame a 15-point halftime deficit Friday to earn the program’s first men’s basketball win, but Guilford thwarted a second comeback and led by as many as 41 in the second half.

Pittman, who also dished out a game-high six assists and had three steals, led four Quakers in double-figure scoring. Matt McCarthy and Will Freeman both scored 13 points and Jake Hopkins added 10. Guilford owned a commanding 46-28 rebounding advantage and harassed the Pacers into 24 turnovers, which led to 30 Quakers’ points.

McCarthy joined Pittman on the all-tournament team, along with Peace’s Antonio Hinnant, who scored a team-best 13 points. The Pacers’ Tyquan Nolan chipped in with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Payton Brooks scored 15 points off the bench in Southern Virginia’s convincing consolation game victory. The senior had 12 by halftime as the Knights (1-1) opened a 45-28 lead at intermission. The Wildcats (1-7) never drew closer than 15 points in the second half as Southern Virginia shot better than 62 percent from the floor in the second half and 53.3% for the game.

Southern Virginia’s Wesley Evans contributed 14 points off the bench. Teammate Isaac Jacobson added 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Jonathan Isaacson tallied 11 points and joined his brother on the all-tournament team.

Jay Keller’s 20 points led Johnson & Wales. Teammate Robbie Sterling totaled eight points and 12 rebounds.
