High Point University’s Shawn Sloan Named a Capital One Academic All-American

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Senior Shawn Sloan of the High Point University men’s soccer team has been named a Capital One Academic All-American the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Friday.

The midfielder is carrying a 4.00 GPA while majoring in biochemistry.

“This is an outstanding honor for Shawn. To be an Academic All-American is one of the biggest honors you can receive in your college career. Shawn is an outstanding student-athlete who we hope serves as a benchmark for those who follow him to strive for.”

Sloan finished the season second on the team with 22 points on six goals and a team-high 10 assists en route to earning first team All-Big South honors. He is third in the nation in assists per game (0.67) and eighth in total assists. Sloan was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the year for a second-straight season and is a three-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll member.

Sloan is the first HPU player to earn Academic All-American honors in two separate seasons in the team’s Division I era. Sloan was previously named an Academic All-American in 2010. Chris Archer is the only other Panther player to be named an Academic All-American, earning the honor in 2006.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 16,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
