Kernersville Medical Shootout: Southwest vs Southern – Boys Basketball – 12-21-12

Day 2 of the Kernersville Medical Shootout featured the matchup of the Cowboys of Southwest facing off against the Storm of Southern Guilford. Southern is coming off a tough loss to the hosts, while the Cowboys remain unbeaten with a convincing win last night over Hopewell.

The Cowboys came out the gate flat as a pancake. The Storm out hustled, executed and just down right wanted it more. A three pointer shortly before the opening stanza came to a close cut the Storm’s lead to 19-16.

The second quarter showed the Storm growing stronger and extending their lead to 11 on several possessions. The Cowboys were doomed by poor shot selection and missed layups, but somehow managed to cut the deficit to 36-30 going into the half.

Heading into the locker-room being down for the first time this season was no sign of concern. A change in the defensive mentality and reminder to stay together was the beginning of something special. The second half was a completely different ball game as the Cowboys jumped all over and around the Storm. After taking their first lead of the game at 40-39 at the 5:40 mark, the Cowboys were only beginning.

It was 58-46 after the third, and then the Storm looked more like a tropical depression as the Cowboys pressure and speed totally took control and held Southern to 9 in the final frame and blew the game wide open to a dominating win at 87-55. What a difference a half can make.

The Storm was lead by Jaqwan McCauley (21). The Cowboys remain perfect on the year and were lead by Terrell Leach (32, 7Reb, 5Stl), Ben Ferguson (16, 3Reb, 2Ast), and KJ Langley (11, 5Ast, 4 Stl).
