In the opening round of the 2012 Sheetz Holiday Classic, the Cowboys played hosts to the Wildcats of Westchester Country Day.
Southwest came into tonight’s match-up looking to stay hot and stay unbeaten while the Wildcats looked to play the role of party crashers. The opening frame was a display of very little defense. Maybe it was the Christmas break and everyone was in a giving mood, but no one was stopping anyone.
Southwest’s Ben Ferguson hit 4 3’s in the opening quarter to keep the Cowboys in it. Southwest scored 6 straight points to close out the frame with a 23-17 advantage.
The second quarter was a defensive battle as the Cowboys slowed the Wildcats down and held them to 9 points in the quarter as Southwest pushed ahead 41-26 going into the break.
After a half opening 3 pointer by the Cowboys, the Wildcats used a 9-2 run, and continued to battle and cut the lead to as few as 46-37. The Cowboys bounced back and maintained a cushion and held a 58-49 headed into the final quarter.
Once again the Cowboys pushed the lead a little further out, and the Wildcats battled back and cut the lead to its closest point at 69-62.
Southwest was resilient and hit free throws and clutch baskets to preserve their smallest margin of victory on the season at 78-64. Westchester was lead by Josh Burton with 23 points. Southwest was lead by Terrell Leach 27, and Ben Ferguson 19.
