Elon Women’s Basketball’s Evans Named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon women’s basketball player Kelsey Evans has been named the Southern Conference’s Student-Athlete of the Week for January 9, the league office announced today.

Evans averaged 15.5 points and 15 rebounds in two wins for Elon last week. She posted 12 points and nine boards in a win over Samford on Saturday, Jan. 5, before helping the Phoenix knock of Chattanooga with her sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and a game-high 21 rebounds on Monday, Jan. 7. The senior’s 21 boards marked a new career high, while she also tied her career high of five blocks in the game. Evans is now five blocks shy of tying Elon’s all-time blocked shots record of 197.

The Raleigh, N.C., native scored the game-tying basket with six seconds left against Chattanooga to help send the game into overtime. In the extra period, Evans scored the team’s first four points, six total, to help Elon to the 70-60 victory over the Lady Mocs. She went 12-of-26 from the field last week to shoot 46 percent and shot 87 percent from the charity stripe.

The exercise science major currently holds a 3.54 GPA and averages a double-double with 14.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. She ranks in the top-10 in the conference in both scoring and rebounds.

Elon will be in action tonight for its third game in five days at Wofford. Tip is set for 6 p.m. in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
