ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s track and field team returns to competition this weekend for its first indoor meet of the 2013 calendar year at the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19. The Phoenix will get its first look at the JDL Fast Track facility, which also hosts the 2013 Southern Conference Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C., next month.

The first scheduled event, the weight throw, will begin at 9 a.m. The running events will start at 10 a.m. with the 5,000-meter run. Wake Forest will provide live results throughout the day, which will be accessible by clicking on the live results link on this page or on the Elon track and field home page at elonphoenix.com.
Last Time Out for the Phoenix
The Phoenix last competed in its season-opening meet of the 2012-13 indoor campaign at the Liberty Kickoff on Dec. 1. Freshman Megan Kirschling won the individual title and set a new school record in the high jump with a height of 5’8” in her first collegiate meet. Kirschling broke the previous mark of 5’5.75” that was set last season by sophomore Louise Prevoteau. Prevoteau established a new program-record of her own at Liberty winning the women’s pentathlon title with a school-record 3,572 points.
Freshmen Sydney Griffin and Jennifer Esposito also made an impact in their collegiate debuts at Elon. The duo claimed the second and third fastest times in school history in the 60-meter hurdles with Griffin clocking in at 8.77 and Esposito at 9.04.
Charlise Morgan threw for a new personal-record of 43’03.25” in the shot put and broke her own mark for the second-best throw on the all-time performance list.
In Competition This Weekend
Along with Morgan, the Phoenix will also have Kayleigh Birks and Kimberlyn Holt compete in the throwing events this weekend. Holt threw a distance of 38’09” in the shot put at Liberty in her first meet with the Phoenix.
In sprints, Esposito, Griffin and Veronica Luedke will compete again in the 60-meter hurdles. Birks, Simone Jackson and Bria Turner will represent the maroon and gold in the 60-meter dash, while Bria Bell is among the runners competing in both the 200-meter and 400-meter runs.
Elon will have three 4x400m relays with Bell, Esposito, Jennifer Pash and Luedke making up the “A” team.
Kirschling returns to compete in the high jump along with Haley Laird, who was third at Liberty with height of 5’2.25”. Marie Borowycz and Janelle McNeil will represent the Phoenix in the jumping events.
After a successful cross country campaign, the Elon distance runners will make their indoor season debut this weekend. Emily Tryon will be the lone runner for the Phoenix in the 5,000-meter run while Sabina Bains and Haylee Dawe will compete in the 3,000-meter run for Elon.
The trio of Julie Hart, Brennan McDavid and Ellie Taff will race in the 800-meter run, while Allyson Oram, Christine Pacewicz, Tereza Novotna, Jenny Gallagher and Caroline McCaslin compete in the one-mile run.

Elon will return to competition next weekend beginning Jan. 25 at the Penn State National in State College, Pa.
