College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 66, Shenandoah 55

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) scored 22 of his game-high 28 points in the second half of Guilford College’s 66-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over visiting Shenandoah University Saturday.

Pittman had just six points after a tightly contested first half that saw Guilford (16-5, 8-4 ODAC) take a 24-21 lead. The senior guard made seven-of-11 second-half shots from the floor, including two three-pointers, which helped the Quakers open a 10-point lead midway through the second half.

Shenandoah’s Jared Carithers kept the Hornets close in the second half by scoring 13 of his team-high 17 points. A pair of Carithers free throws drew the visitors to within 49-44 with 6:47 left in regulation. However, Guilford scored the next seven points to open a 56-44 margin with 4:13 remaining. The Quakers sealed their second straight win with 10-for-10 free-throw shooting in the final 2:27.

The taller Quakers used their size advantage to enjoy a 46-25 rebounding edge. Guilford collected 17 second-chance points, which led to 19 points, and outscored the Hornets, 22-4, in the paint. Rookie center Zeb Richardson (West Jefferson, N.C./Ashe County) collected a career- and game-high 16 rebounds as well as 14 points for his team-leading fifth double-double of the year. Matt McCarthy scored eight points for Guilford and teammate Jake Hopkins (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) had four points and eight rebounds.

Eli McEathron and Shaquille Rodney both scored 11 points for Shenandoah (3-18, 0-12 ODAC), which has dropped 12 straight.

Guilford visits league-rival Randolph College Wednesday (2/6) at 7:00 p.m.
