College Baseball Final – Greensboro 14, Guilford 9

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matthew Parker’s (Snow Camp, N.C./Southern Alamance) two-out, three-run double capped Greensboro College’s seven-run eighth inning and rallied the visiting Pride past Guilford College, 14-9, Wednesday in nonconference baseball action.

The Pride (2-0) erased a 7-2 deficit after five innings thanks to a four-run sixth inning and the seven run-eighth. Greensboro scored five times in the eighth inning of its season-opening 8-4 win at Berry College on Saturday.

Kent Peterson had a two-run double in the Guilford first and Will Byrd’s single in the fifth plated two as the Quakers opened a five-run cushion off of Pride starter Harrison Hall. Four Greensboro relievers combined to hold Guilford to two runs the rest of the way. Brandon Matthews (1-0) threw two scoreless frames and earned the victory.

Trailing 7-6 with one out in the top of the eighth, Greensboro had 10 straight runners reach base and scored seven times in the frame. The Pride had five hits in the inning and took advantage of three walks and a wild pitch to open a 13-7 lead.

The Quakers answered with two in the bottom half of the inning on RBI hits by Peterson and Corey Wallace, but Greensboro closer Brian Robbett came on to get the third out of the inning, stranding runners on first and second.

Austin Catherina led Greensboro’s offense with four hits, including and RBI double. Sophomore James Feldmann contributed three hits and a team-high three RBI, including run-scoring plays in the eighth and ninth innings. Center fielder Matt Irwin delivered three hits and scored four times.

Guilford’s Justin Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) went 4-for-4 with two RBI. Peterson had a game-best four RBI and doubled twice.

The Quakers (1-2) host NCAA Division II Bluefield State College Saturday (2/9) at 1:00 p.m. at McBane Field.
