Game Report: High Point Central and Southwest Guilford Varsity Boys

It was the third time around for the city and conference foes of High Point Central and Southwest Guilford. Both previous matchups were dog fights that the Cowboys were able to come away victorious with the latest just last week. It’s diffcult to face off against the team 3 times a season, so what would tip the scales this time around? Can the Cowboys keep the perfect season alive?

The opening quarter opened with the Cowboys scoring the first 2 baskets, but the Bison responded well. The Bison took their lone lead of the opening half at 7-6, but the Cowboys quickly hit a 3 pointer to retake the lead, and eventually the frame ended with SW up 13-10. Southwest used the last basket of the quarter as momentum and scored the next 8 straight to push the lead to double digits at 21-10. The Bison would once again responded with a 7-0 run of their own to make it 21-17. The Bison would stick around and keep it close and the tally was 28-25.

Central opened the second half by tying the ballgame up at 28. The very next trip up the court, SW scored, but the Bison woudl score a 3 pointer to take their first lead of the second half. The Bison would even go up 41-36 at the 2:33 mark. The Cowboys would finish the final minutes of the third was a flourish as the Cowboys would score the final 8 points, including a three pointer with 25 seconds left and then held the Bison in the quarter’s final seconds to take the score to 44-43 headed into the final frame.

The Bison would score the opening basket of the frame, but the Cowboys once again right away and regained the lead at 46-45. SW got the lead to 51-45 and the Bison responded with another basket, but an emphatic tip slam by Terrell Leach sent the crowd into a frenzy. But he was not finished. Another tip slam 90 seconds later, Leach got a great read on a shot going up and slammed home one of the best tip slams anyone will ever see in high school to take the lead to 55-50. A Bison three tried to settle the crowd down, but clutch free throw shooting and defensive stops allowed the Cowboys to hang on for a 22nd straight victory at 64-60.

The Bison were led by Jamal Thompson with 16 points.

Southwest was led by another double double by Leach (34, 17 Reb, 2 Blk, 2 Stl), DJ Chamblee (10, 2 Reb, 2 Stl), and a sold defensive effort by Andrew Bullock who didn’t get in the books but did all of the intangibles.
