College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 73, Emory & Henry 65

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Matt McCarthy (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) stroked seven three-pointers and scored a career-high 25 points in Guilford College’s 73-65 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over Emory & Henry College Wednesday night.

McCarthy drained four threes in the first half, including three during a 15-8 run that opened a 12-point Quakers’ lead 4:24 before halftime. Guilford led 40-30 at the break, thanks to McCarthy and 10 Wasps’ turnovers, which led to 18 Quakers’ points.

McCarthy had two more three-pointers in the second half’s opening minutes along with one of his career- and game-high five steals. After the theft he fed Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) for a layup and a 54-37 Guilford lead with 15:16 left in regulation. The Quakers (17-7, 9-6 ODAC) shot just 26.7 percent from the floor in the second half, which let Emory & Henry (4-19. 2-13 ODAC) stick around, but the Wasps hurt themselves with 15 second-half turnovers. An Armando Murrell layup brought Emory & Henry to within 66-57 with just under two minutes left, but Pittman responded with a three-pointer, effectively sealing the win.

The basket gave Pittman 12 points on an off-shooting night in which he made just five-of-14 shots from the floor, including 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. He did have three steals and dished out a game-high five assists. Will Freeman matched his season high with 15 points off the bench and also had six rebounds in 16 minutes. Rookie Zeb Richardson (West Jefferson, N.C./Ashe County) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior Travis Tracy scored six points and collected a team-high eight rebounds. The Quakers corralled 21 offensive caroms, which led to 24 second-chance points.

Murrell led Emory & Henry with 17 points and a game-high 10 boards. He shot eight-of-12 from the floor and helped the Wasps outscore Guilford, 32-28, in the paint. Tyler Driver contributed 15 points and Myles Turner finished with 12 points, five boards, four assists and four steals.

Guilford closes the regular season Saturday (2/16) at league-rival Bridgewater College at 2:00 p.m.
