GC Men’s Basketball Beats Methodist For Seventh Straight Win

The Greensboro College men’s basketball team (15-8 overall, 8-5 USA South) beat Methodist (9-13 overall, 6-7 USA South) 74-57 on Wednesday for its seventh straight victory and ninth in its past ten games. A strong defensive effort, highlighted by 21 steals, was key in the win.

The Pride fell behind 10-6 in the early before a 12-1 spurt put them firmly on top by a score of 18-11. The lead reached double digits at 24-13 following a three by Donald Anderson with 6:17 left in the half.

The advantage hovered between and eight and 13 points for the remainder of the first half, with Greensboro taking a 33-21 lead into the break.

Leading 37-27 four minutes into the second half, The Pride blew the game wide open with an 11-2 run to push the margin to 48-29 with 13:38 to go. Devonta Davis would add a three one minute later to bring the lead to 53-33.

The gap would extend as large as 28 points at 69-41 before the Monarchs closed to within 74-57 at the conclusion of the game.

Davis led all scorers on the night with 18 points, followed by Damian Dixon with 17. Luqman Tijani also contributed with 14 points on the night.

As a team, Greensboro finished the game shooting 41.4% from the field and went 8-21 (38.1%) from three. The Pride forced 31 turnovers for the game on the defensive end with Chakiris Moss recording a game high five take aways. Dixon, Tijani, Raheem Martin, Davis and Tracy Jester each came away with three steals apiece.

Greensboro will conclude the regular season on Saturday with a 4 p.m. home game against LaGrange. The Pride will recognize their 2012-13 senior class consisting of Donald Anderson, Brian Thomas, Tijani, and Moss.
