NCHSAA State Dual Team Wrestling Championships

Championships in four classifications will be decided Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 24th annual dual team wrestling championships.

The championships are held on high school campuses, alternating years between Eastern and Western sites. All of the teams advancing to the Saturday championship matches in 2-A, 3-A and 4-A earned a pair of victories on Thursday night to gain a shot at the state title, while the 1-A schools wrestled only the regional round with fewer schools in the tournament.

Winston-Salem Parkland (47-0) seeks its seventh consecutive dual team title, with three at the 3-A level and then the last three 4-A crowns. The Mustangs will travel to Fayetteville to wrestle at Jack Britt for the 4-A championship at 5 pm.

Parkland has an incredible 51-8 record all-time in dual team wrestling playoff matches, in 17 appearances in the tournament.

The 3-A final sends Eden Morehead (21-6) to Fred T. Foard (38-2) in Catawba County to wrestle the Tigers in a 5 pm start. Morehead has five previous NCHSAA dual team championships but is in the finals for the first time since 2008. Foard is making its initial appearance in the dual team championships.

The matchup in 2-A has Newport Croatan (32-4) against another school located in Catawba County, Newton-Conover (42-5), with a 6 pm match time. Croatan is in its fourth straight finals appearance and won state crowns in 2010 and ’11 before finishing as runner-up to Piedmont last year. Newton-Conover beat Piedmont on Thursday night in the state semifinals to advance, rolling up a 36-3 lead in the match, and the Red Devils were state dual team runners-up three straight years in 2007-09.

In the 1-A championship, West Wilkes (16-1) hosts North Rowan (27-2). West Wilkes is the three-time defending 1-A champ and is in the finals for the fifth straight season. The 1-A final will start at 6 pm.
