The Pride women’s basketball team (12-11 overall, 8-9 USA South) rallied to send Saturday’s game with Maryville (21-3 overall, 15-2 USA South) into overtime but could not pull out the victory. Greensboro outscored the Scots 34-28 in the second half to force the extra session but lost the overtime period 11-5.
Chevena Pickard hit the shot of the day, rolling in a three-point basket to tie the score at 61-61 with no time left in regulation. Maryville put the first six points on the board in overtime and fended off The Pride down the stretch for the road win.
Greensboro held a slight lead for much of the first half until the Scots took control in the final four minutes. Maryville used an 12-0 run to break a 21-21 tie and go ahead 33-21 with 1:29 to go in the half.
The Pride made one final run, scoring the final six points to pull within striking distance at 33-27 heading into the break.
Trailing 37-31 in the opening minutes of the second half, The Pride went on a 10-0 spurt to regain the lead at 41-37. The margin would grow to five at 43-38 before the Scots narrowed the gap to 42-41 at the 11:05 point.
Greensboro continued to fight off Maryville until the 6:39 mark when the Scots went back on top 48-47. Maryville would lead the rest of the way until Pickard’s buzzer beating trey to send the game into overtime.
Pickard had a solid showing with a game high 32 points with six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Bianca Richburg also contributed 21 points to go along with eight rebounds and five blocks. Richburg’s five swat performance pushed her atop the school’s single season block category.
As a team, The Pride shot 38.1% from the field and went 6-19 from three. Maryville won the rebounding category by a margin of 46-31. Defensively, Greensboro forced 23 total turnovers on the afternoon.
The Pride will be back at home on Sunday to finish out the regular season against Ferrum. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Hanes Gym. Greensboro will recognize its two seniors – Richburg and Jena Cabe – who will be playing in their final home game.
