College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Colorado College 11, Guilford 8

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jack Kreitler scored a game-high three goals in Colorado College’s 11-8 men’s lacrosse win at Guilford College Sunday in the Quakers’ season opener.

Kreitler had two scores in the Tigers’ (2-0) six-goal opening period. Charles Curtis’ man-up goal 3:29 into the game started the scoring and he assisted a Nick Ahrens score at the 7:53 mark for a 2-0 Colorado College lead. Kreitler netted his first score 24 seconds later after Colorado College’s Sayre Thomas won the ensuing faceoff. The Tigers tallied three times in the final 2:35 of the first quarter for a 6-0 lead.

Guilford’s Duncan Fitzgerald backed his defender down and fired a quick shot past Tigers’ keeper Chase Murphy to put the Quakers on the scoreboard 8:19 into the second quarter. The teams traded man-up goals and Colorado took an 8-3 lead into halftime.

Ahrens notched his second score of the day 1:09 into the third quarter, but the Quakers roared back with five of the next six goals. Guilford rookie Daniel Hughey (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) scored his first two college markers in the run, including a one-timer from classmate Adam Fiore (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) that made it a 9-7 game with 9:12 left in regulation.

Guilford’s rally stalled as Thomas won the ensuing face-off and the Quakers were called for two penalties. Kreitler’s third goal of the game came with six minutes left and restored a three-goal Tigers’ lead. Chris Lee followed with the visitors’ third man-up goal nearly three minutes later. Fiore scored with 2:08 left, but Guilford drew no closer.

Kreitler and Ahrens were Colorado College’s lone multi-goal scorers. Curtis finished with a game-high four points on a goal and three assists. Teammate Henri Halle added one score and two helpers. Thomas won 16-of-20 face-offs and collected a game-best 11 ground balls. Murphy finished with seven saves and two ground balls in goal.

Fiore had three points on two goals and an assist for the Quakers, who had six different goal scorers. Juquan Tellis scored once and had an assist, plus four ground balls. Nick Huckins paced the Quakers with five pickups and three caused turnovers. Jacob Broome made eight saves in his first college start in goal.

Guilford returns to action Wednesday (2/20) at cross-town rival Greensboro College at 3:30 p.m.
