GC Women’s Lacrosse Downed in Season Opener to Sewanee

The Pride women’s lacrosse team (0-1 overall) was outscored 9-2 in the second half as Sewanee (1-1 overall) pulled away for a 16-8 victory on Saturday.

Greensboro wasted little time getting the offense in sync, scoring 11 seconds into the game on a goal by Nadya Fedun.

The teams traded goals throughout the first half, with Fedun and Brittany Ziobro beating the keeper twice apiece to keep the score tied at 4-4. Kirstin Norris and Fedun both found the goal again down the stretch to keep The Pride within 7-6 at the break.

The Tigers came out firing in the second, scoring four goals in the first eight minutes to take an 11-6 advantage. Kayla Gonzalez and Fedun kept Greensboro around with two straight scores to pull within 11-8.

Sewanee took control from there, putting the final five goals of the day on the scoreboard to earn a 16-8 road win.

The Tigers held a 30-22 advantage in shots for the game. Greensboro forced Sewanee into 18 turnovers, while committing 16. The Pride also picked up 14 ground balls to seven for the Tigers.

Fedun paced Greensboro with four goals on eight shots, with seven coming on target. Ziobro also converted two scores on four shots. Alexa Besch forced a team high four turnovers to lead the The Pride defense. Kaleigh Hemstock suffered the loss in net despite making 12 saves.

Next up for Greensboro is a home date with Lynchburg next Saturday at Pride Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
