College Athletics News – Guilford Pair Collects Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s John Brvenik (Storrs, Conn./E.O Smith) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Award and the Quakers’ E’leyna Garcia (Plantation, Fla./Pine Crest Prep)was named the league’s Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week Monday. Garcia also won the Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week Award, presented by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Brvenik, a 6-0 freshman, clinched Guilford’s 5-4 win over Virginia Wesleyan College Feb. 15 by pulling out a three-set victory at sixth singles. He downed the Marlins’ Adam Owen Ferrari, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, for his first college win. Brvenik is now 1-2 in three college appearances and the Quakers are 1-1 on the young season.

Garcia, a 5-10 junior attacker, led Guilford with a career-high eight points on six goals and two assists in the Quakers’ season-opening 18-5 win over Sewanee Feb. 16. She also picked up six ground balls and won three draw controls. Her eight points stand ninth in Guilford’s single-game history and her six goals are the sixth-highest total.

Garcia moved into eighth place on Guilford’s career scoring list with 152 points and into ninth place on the Quakers’ career goals chart with 108. She also climbed into third place on Guilford’s career assists list with 44.
