The Greensboro College softball team (1-3) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Roanoke (2-0) on Thursday afternoon. The Pride lost the first game 4-1 and the second game 5-2, despite outhitting the Maroons in both games.
In game one The Maroons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after one inning. The Pride would cut the deficit in half to 2-1 in the second on a Taylor Freeman home run.
Greensboro threatened in the third inning with a runner on third but came up empty. Roanoke extended their lead with a run in the third and fifth innings to win 4-1
Six Pride players recorded a hit, while outhitting the Maroons 6-4. Freeman led the way with one run batted in. Kelsey Sanfilippo took the loss despite throwing a complete game and striking out 13 batters.
In game two Roanoke would again jump out to an early lead of 2-0 after three innings. The Maroon’s would add three runs in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.
Greensboro would threaten for their first run of the game in the sixth but Jackie Nicholson would be thrown out at home trying to score on a Freeman fielder’s choice.
The Pride would finally reach the board in the seventh. Reihle Kash started it off with a single. Sarah Tompkins plated the only Greensboro runs of the game on a two run home run to make it 5-2.
The Pride were led by Nicholson, Kash, Tompkins, and Connolly with one hit apiece. Thompkins had a team high two runs batted in. Greensboro outhit Roanoke 4-2. Hannah Pennell pitched three solid innings in relief, allowing no hits on three runs while striking out six hitters.
The Greensboro softball team will be back in action tomorrow with a double header against Messiah College. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Burlington Athletic Complex.
