Greensboro College Baseball Knocks Off Lake Erie 7-4

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) — The Pride baseball team (9-8 overall) defeated Lake Erie (0-7 overall) 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon. Greensboro jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after five innings and hung on to defeat the Storm.
Greensboro would strike first with a run in the bottom of the first. Matt Irwin drew a walk to start the game off. Matthew Parker singled to center field moving Irwin to second.Austin Catherina reached on an error that scored Irwin for the early 1-0 lead.

The Pride extended their lead in the fifth with three runs. Kyle Schmidt opened the inning with a single to left center. James Feldmann doubled to right center to knock home Schmidt and make it 2-0. Bill Wooding extended the lead to 4-0, reaching on a fielder’s that scored Parker, while Feldmann scored on a throwing error.

Lake Erie got on the board in the sixth with two runs to cut the lead in half to 4-2. However, Greensboro responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Seth Caison reached on a fielder’s choice. A Jon Krecicki sacrifice bunt moved Caison to second. Schmidt singled to right field, bring Caison home for the 5-2 lead. Irwin followed with a bunt to plate Krecicki and push the lead to 6-2.

The Pride added their final run of the game in the seventh on a Caison double to left field, scoring Austin Catherina to make it 7-2. The Storm tried to rally in the eighth with two runs but were unable to get any closer then three runs down the stretch.

Greensboro outhit Lake Erie 13-8. Four Greensboro players – Steven Pfeiffer, Parker, Caison, and Schmidt – finished the game with two hits. Kris Peeden got the win, going five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Brandon Matthews picked up his first save of the season retiring the side in the ninth.

The Pride will start their spring break trip in Florida with a double header against Mount Union on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in Lakeland, Florida.
