College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 11, U.S. Merchant Marine 6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chase Clausen (Canby, Ore./Lake Oswego) and Nick Mann (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic) both scored twice in Guilford College’s 11-6 nonconference men’s lacrosse win over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Saturday. The Quakers (3-2) had nine different goal scorers in the win.
Guilford sophomore goaltender Garrison Goth (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) recorded six saves and two ground balls in his first college start. He received solid support from his defense, led by classmate Nick Huckins’ (Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) career-best five caused turnovers and four ground balls, both game highs. Teammate Trey Atkinson (Homewood, Ala./Homewood) forced four Mariners’ miscues and had two ground balls. Merchant Marine turned the ball over 26 times, compared to the Quakers’ 17.

The Mariners’ Troy Smith (Deer Park, Texas/Deer Park) opened the game’s scoring with an unassisted tally 4:04 into the game, but the Quakers’ balanced and patient attack reeled off six of the game’s next seven goals to take a 6-2 halftime lead. Sophomore Chandler Zirkle (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) netted a man-up goal for Guilford and later assisted a Mark Fiore (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) score in the second quarter. The Quakers had six different first-half goal scorers.

Clausen scored his second goal 4:20 into the third quarter, which was followed by a rare marker by Huckins, a defenseman, 14 seconds later. The sophomore collected the ground ball after the face-off and took it to the cage for his first college goal. Clausen and Huckins’ goals came during a 4-1 Guilford run that opened a 10-4 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Clausen added an assist for a team-high three points. Zirkle and Duncan Fitzgerald (North Sutton, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) both had a goal and an assist. Juquan Tellis (Birmingham, Ala./G.W. Carver) paced the Quakers with a game-high five ground balls.

Geoff Harty (Chicago, Ill./Glenbrook South) led Merchant Marine with two goals and John Atkinson (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) contributed a goal and two assists. Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) won 14-of-20 face-offs and picked up four ground balls. Sophomore goalie Alex Peyreigne (Weston , Conn./Weston) stopped 11 shots and had two ground balls.

The Quakers host Farmingdale State College Wednesday (3/13) at 4:00 p.m.
