Elon Men’s Basketball Accepts Invitation to CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament

ELON, N.C. – Following a 21-11 season that included a Southern Conference North Division title, the Elon University men’s basketball team has accepted an invitation to play in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). Elon’s first-round opponent in the CIT is still to be determined.

The postseason tournament marks Elon’s first at the Division I level and only the ninth overall postseason appearance in 104 years of basketball.

“We’re thrilled and excited to have earned a postseason opportunity,” said Elon head coach Matt Matheny. “We’re very happy to be a part of March Madness.”

Now in its fifth year, the CIT consists of 32 teams. First-round games are March 19-20; second-round games will be played March 21-23; the quarterfinals will be held March 24-26; the semifinals are March 28-30. The CIT Championship Game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network on Tuesday, April 2.

Elon’s last postseason appearance was the 1996-97 season, the school’s final year in NCAA Division II. Elon won the South Atlantic Conference Tournament to advance to the NCAA South Atlantic Regional Tournament.

Elon’s 21 wins this season are the most in the school’s Division I era and most since the 1973-74 season. The Phoenix won 13 games in Southern Conference play this season, the most since joining the league in 2004.
