GC Softball Splits With Methodist; Win Streak Ends at Nine

The Pride softball team (13-6, 7-1 USA South) split a doubleheader with Methodist (12-11, 3-2 USA South) on Wednesday evening. Greensboro won game one 5-3 extending their winning streak to nine games, before getting it snapped in game two 6-2.

Methodist got on the board first in game one with a run in the second inning. However, Greensboro stormed back with four runs in the third inning to take the lead.

Chelsea Brewer led off, reaching on an error by the pitcher. Jackie Nicholson reached on a bunt down the third base line to move Brewer over to second. Sarah Tompkins singled to left field to push Nicholson across, tying the game at 1-1. Sarah Connolly followed with a single up the middle, scoring a run to take a 2-1 lead. Rae Hall then doubled to left field that scored two runs, extending the lead to 4-1.

The Monarchs posted two runs in the fifth to trim the lead to 4-3. The Pride got the final run of the game in the seventh on an RBI single by Connolly to win the game 5-3.

Greensboro outhit their opponent 12-6. Tompkins led the way with three hits. Brewer and Connolly had two hits apiece. Connolly and Hall recorded a game high two runs batted in. Kelsey Sanfilippo got the win, while Hannah Pennell picked up the save in two innings of relief.

In game two, Methodist again jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Greensboro tied the game up in the fourth with two runs.

Taylor Freeman drew a walk to open the inning. Tompkins homered to left center, tying the game at 2-2. However, the Monarchs took the lead right back at 3-2 with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

The Pride threatened in the sixth inning loading up the bases, but were unable to push any runners across the plate. Methodist added to its lead it in the sixth with three runs and winning the game 6-2

Tompkins again led the way with two hits. Alex Wickham and Reihle Kash each recorded a hit.

Greensboro will be back in action on the road Saturday with a doubleheader at William Peace. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
