College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 16, Lynchburg 12

GREENSBORO, N.C. – NCAA Division III lacrosse goals leader E’leyna Garcia set Guilford College’s season standard with six scores in the Quakers’ 16-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over visiting Lynchburg College Wednesday night. The victory marked Guilford’s school-record seventh in a row.

Teammate Eleanora Keene matched her career high with five goals, including four in the second half that helped Guilford (8-1, 4-0 ODAC) erase a four-goal deficit.

After falling behind 6-3 in the first half, Lynchburg (5-4, 2-2 ODAC) reeled off seven straight scores over the two halves and took a 10-6 edge on Julie Will’s goal 4:53 into the second half. Katherine Francis scored three of her team-best five goals during the run, which included Katie Seidel’s score 13 seconds before halftime to tie the game at 6-6.

With the Hornets hassling Garcia and fellow attacker Lily Colley, the Quakers turned to Keene, who ripped off three goals in a 96-second span that drew Guilford to within 10-9. Keene fed Garcia with the game-tying score at the 20:50 mark.

The Quakers’ won the ensuing draw and after a yellow card sent Francis to the bench, Becca Colley notched a free-position goal with 20:24 remaining, which gave Guilford the lead for good. Keene’s natural hat trick triggered a decisive 8-0 Quakers’ run, which opened a 14-10 lead with 10:48 left in regulation.

Francis stopped the spurt with her fourth score of the night, which brought Lynchburg to within 14-11, but the Hornets drew no closer. Francis and Colley traded tallies to close out the game’s scoring.

The Quakers overcame a season-high 26 turnovers and 13 failed clears caused by Lynchburg’s aggressive ride. Guilford, the national leader in draws per game, won 22 of 30 draws and got a season-high 16 saves from senior goalie Liza Mettler. Mettler made eight stops in both halves and saved six free-position shots. She also had four ground balls and caused a turnover in a solid performance.

Keene had 11 of Guilford’s 22 draw controls and also picked up seven ground balls and caused three turnovers in her six-point night. Garcia finished with seven points on six goals and one assist. She raised her season goals total to 61 through nine games, four better than the previous Guilford record she shared with Tina Beahan ’97 and Summer Frazier ’12. Lily Colley added four goals and an assist, and also caused three turnovers.

Francis totaled a team-high six points, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Jennifer Adkin notched three goals and an assist. Brianna LaMarca forced three miscues and picked up a team-high four ground balls. Hailey Bossert made five saves and had three pickups.
