College Baseball Final – Guilford 3, Greensboro 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – John Macon Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford (Western Carolina)) went three-for-four with two RBI in Guilford College’s 3-1 baseball win over Greensboro College Wednesday night at NewBridge Bank Park. The victory gained a split of the season series after Greensboro took a 14-9 decision at Guilford (12-13) in February.

Smith’s RBI single in the third inning scored Jordan Slate (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) and broke a 1-1 tie. Slate reached as a hit batsman to lead off the frame and advanced on Herc Ingels’ sacrifice bunt. Smith added run-scoring single to right in the fifth inning, which plated an unearned run and opened a 3-1 Quakers’ lead.

Six different Guilford pitchers combined to hold Greensboro (12-18) to a single run and five hits. Justin Jordan (1-0) earned his first victory of the season. He became the pitcher of record when Guilford took the lead for good in the third inning. He left the game as scheduled in the bottom of the third. Fellow relievers Levi Pruitt, Avery Rogers and Andrew Martin yielded only two hits over the next four frames before sophomore Lou Trosch (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg)worked the final three innings for his first college save.

Greensboro’s Matt Irwin had two of the Pride’s hits and Jordan Powell plated the team’s run with a second-inning sacrifice squeeze. Greensboro threatened in the eighth inning when runners reached second and third with one out. Irwin was thrown out at third after a rundown that started when pinch-hitter Seth Caison missed on a suicide squeeze bunt attempt. Caison was later called out on strikes with a runner on second, which ended the inning.

Guilford returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday (3/30) at Hampden-Sydney College.
