High Point University’s John Brown has been named to the Kyle Macy Freshman All-America team, it was announced by CollegeInsider.com on Monday. Brown, who was named Big South Freshman of the Year, was one of just two players from a mid-major conference to receive the honor.
Brown led High Point with 16.4 points per game and ranked second on the team with 6.1 rebounds per game in 2012-13. Brown shot 51.9 percent from the floor and averaged 1.2 blocks and 1.7 steals per game. He was a near-unanimous selection for Big South Freshman of the Year, earning 26 of 29 possible first-place votes. He was also the second freshman ever named to the All-Big South first team.
Brown scored at least 20 points 12 times this season and he registered double-figure points in 25 of his 28 games. He also notched four double-doubles. He was named Big South Freshman of the Week five times. Brown’s dunk in his collegiate debut against UNC Greensboro was a finalist for Dunk of the Year, which will be announced on April 4.
Of the 21 players included in the Kyle Macy Freshman All-America team, there are four each from the Big East and Pac 12 and two each from the ACC, Big 12 and Big Ten. The only player other than Brown selected from a mid-major conference was Georgia State’s R.J. Hunter.
The Panthers went 12-4 in Big South play this season, winning the conference’s North Division title and setting a team record for Big South wins. It was HPU’s first Big South title in men’s basketball and first postseason appearance since moving up to NCAA Div. I in 1999-2000. High Point returns 11 players who accounted for 79 percent of scoring and 63 percent of rebounding for the 2013-14 season.
The Kyle Macy All-Americans are finalists for the Kyle Macy Award, which is presented annually to the top freshman in Division I college basketball. It is named in honor of Kyle Macy, who was “Mr. Basketball” in Indiana in 1975 and played collegiate basketball at Purdue and Kentucky. He was a three-time All-American at Kentucky. The 2013 Kyle Macy award will be presented to the nation’s top freshman on April 5 at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta.
