Jake Hong Joins HPU Volleyball Staff

HIGH POINT, N.C. -The High Point University volleyball team has added Jake Hong as an assistant coach, head coach Jason Oliver announced on Monday. Hong has nearly 10 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and club levels.

“This is a great day for the High Point volleyball program,” Oliver said. “Jake brings such a passion for the game and a true understanding for how to help this team continue to improve. He is a great balance to my personality and I know that the players and future recruits are excited to have him help lead the way to more Big South Championships.”

Hong has been the head coach of the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club since 2004 and served as director of the program since 2010. He has coached 30 players who earned Div. I scholarships, including Stanford All-American Carly Wopat. As head coach of the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club, Hong won four USA Junior National Medals and coached nine USA Junior National All-Tournament players.

Hong coached for two seasons at UC Santa Barbara in 2004 and 2005, helping the Gauchos to back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Gauches advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2004. He coached two All-Americans, Kristin Nelson and Janine Sandell while at Santa Barbara.

Hong also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal Poly where he coached five All-Big West players and helped the team to the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. While with the Mustangs he also coached the women’s club volleyball team.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to work with Coach Oliver at High Point University,” Hong said. “HPU has been building a great program in recent years and I am honored to help continue that success. High Point has a great family atmosphere throughout campus and I am thrilled to be a Panther.”
