College Men’s Golf Results – Ratner Third, Guilford Fifth at Emory Spring Invitational

ATLANTA – Guilford College senior Noah Ratner (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) carded a four-under-par 68 in Tuesday’s second and final round of the Emory Spring Invitational to finish third in the 78-man field. Ratner’s play helped the Quakers move from seventh to fifth place in the 15-team event, which included some of NCAA Division III’s top-ranked units.

Number-one Oglethorpe University turned in the tourney’s low score Tuesday with a four-under-par 284, which helped the Stormy Petrels pass first-round leader Methodist University and win the tournament by seven strokes. Oglethorpe shot 287-284-571 in its third tournament victory of the spring. The second-ranked Monarchs settled for second after shooting 285-293-578. Huntingdon College (589) and Berry College (595) placed third and fourth, respectively.

Oglethorpe’s Anthony Maccaglia, the defending NCAA Division III champion, carded a 71-67-138 for the win, one stroke better than first-round leader Brian Jaeger of Christopher Newport University who shot 69-70-139 and came home second.

Ratner’s 68 was second only to tournament medalist Maccaglia’s 67 among Tuesday’s scores and helped the Guilford senior clinch his fifth straight top-seven finish. His third-place effort enabled the 11th-ranked Quakers to shave nine strokes off their opening-round 303 to finish at 597. Teammate Travis Tolbert shot 74 Tuesday and finished in a tie for 32nd place individually at 152. Guilford’s Dallas Page (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County (Averett)) was one shot better in 24th place with a 75-76-151. Nick Shedd also shot 76 Tuesday and placed 49th with a 154. Drew Thompson shot 77-78-155 and came home in 53rd place.

Coach Corey Maggard’s Quakers have nearly three weeks off before defending their title at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships April 21-23 in Cape Charles, Va.
