The #3 seed Pride women’s lacrosse team rallied from deficits of 5-0 and 11-7 to beat #2 seed Ferrum 13-12 in overtime in the USA South Tournament on Friday afternoon. With the victory, Greensboro advances to the conference title match against #1 Christopher Newport on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Nadya Fedun opened the first overtime frame with a goal for The Pride, before the Panthers evened the game at 12-12 heading into the second overtime session. Brittany Ziobro recorded the lone goal of the final period, finding net at the 2:40 mark for the game winner.
Ziobro also netted the tying goal in regulation for Greensboro, converting with 1:48 to go to send the game into overtime. Ziobro’s regulation goal capped a four goal run to help The Pride overcome an 11-7 deficit.
Kirstin Norris started the run with a man-up score, followed by goals by Ziobro, Fedun and Ziobro again.
Greensboro started the day slow, falling behind 5-0 before rallying with six of the final scores of the first half to even the game at 6-6 at the break. Fedun scored three of The Pride’s first half goals, with Ziobro adding two and Alexa Besch scoring one.
Ziobro finished the day with six goals to take over the top mark for goals in a season in the school record books. She entered the day three goals from tying the record of 61.
Also contributing to the offensive attack was Fedun with five goals, along with Besch and Norris with one apiece. Norris won a game high seven draw controls, while Leah Holle led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers.
The winner of Saturday’s championship match will earn an automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
