College Baseball Final – Guilford 7-7, Southern Virginia 17-6

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Justin Pittman’s one-out single in the seventh inning capped Guilford’s comeback win, 7-6. The Quakers scored four runs in the seventh to earn a split of the nonconference doubleheader against Southern Virginia University. The Knights won game one was 17-7.

The Quakers struck first in the nightcap but were quickly countered with a Tyler Cox grand slam, Southern Virginia 4-1. A two-run third brought Guilford within one run. The Knights scored two more runs in the next couple innings. Guilford came up big in the seventh inning. A Kent Peterson RBI double sparked a four-run comeback in the last at-bat.

Guilford’s (16-18) David Cook had a team-high three hits in the nightcap. John Macon Smith and Peterson each had two hits. Peterson tallied a game-high two RBI. Tyler Tuttle (4-1) earned his team-leading fifth win of the season on the mound for the Quakers.

Southern Virginia’s (18-13) C.J. Andrus went 3-for-3 during game two. Tyler Cox had a game-high four RBI. Scott Austin (0-2) earned the loss on the mound for the Knights.

The Quakers fell behind 8-0 by the second inning. Jordan Slate hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second, followed by RBI singles from Peterson and Casey Mann, putting the Quakers within two, 8-6. Guilford pulled within one with an unearnd run scoring on a fielding error in the third.

Trager Hintze’s second homerun expanded the Knights’ lead to five in the sixth. Southern Virginia tacked on five runs in the 7th to seal the deal.

Mitch Stevenson, Andrus and Robert Key had three hits apiece. Hintze’s seven RBI was a game-high. Stevenson added three RBI. Jonathan Hodges (2-1) earned the win on the mound for the Knights.

Slate led the Quakers with four RBI on two hits. Smith and Ben Esser also had two hits. Will James (1-7) earned the loss for Guilford.

The Quakers return to action Tuesday, Apr. 16 against Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent Emory & Henry College at McBane Field. The game starts at 3:00 p.m.
