Records Fall as Elon Track and Field Wraps Competition at Joe Hilton Invite

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Throwers Charlise Morgan and Suzanne Martin extended their school-records in the shot put and javelin throw, respectively, as the Elon track and field team competed at the Joe Hilton Invitational on Saturday, April 13. The Phoenix also claimed a title at the meet, its final one of the regular-season before the outdoor conference championships next weekend.

“I was pleased overall with our performance and thought today went well,” said Phoenix head coach Mark Elliston. “We’ll have another week of practice to fine tune some things and get some people back healthy for conference next week.”

Martin had a heave of 141’7” (43.15m) in the javelin throw, breaking her own school-record in the event for the second consecutive meet and finishing as the runner-up. It is the third time this season that Martin has broken the program’s all-time javelin mark.

Morgan broke her previous school-mark in the shot put with a heave of 46’1.5” (14.06m) and was third overall. Morgan had previously set the school-record at the Wake Forest open earlier in the season.

In the 100-meter dash, Bria Turner claimed the title in the race after clocking in at 12.64. Elon had three of the top four finishers in the event as Bria Bell (12.72, 3rd) and Simone Jackson (12.72, 4th) also competed for the Phoenix.

Veronica Luedke ran the second fastest time in school-history in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.55 and finished second overall.

The Phoenix will gear up for the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships next weekend, April 20-21, in Statesboro, Ga.
