GREENSBORO, N.C. — Appalachian State University baseball broke a 4-4 tie with five late runs and cruised to a series-clinching 9-5 victory over UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Greensboro-area native Jaylin Davis(Northeast Guilford High School) highlighted the early surge with a two-out, bases-clearing three-run triple to right-center field in the second inning.

Appalachian State (20-11, 10-7 SoCon) scored three runs with two outs in the seventh inning to snap the 4-4 deadlock then added two insurance runs in the eighth to take a 9-4 lead. UNCG (17-19, 5-10 SoCon) tried to rally with three hits in the bottom of the ninth but plated only one run before Appalachian closed out its 20th victory of the season.

Preston Troutman delivered what proved to be the game-winning hit when he lined a 1-1 pitch from UNCG starter Lee Gilliam (2-2) into right-center field with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh. Troutman’s single drove in Will Callaway and Josh Zumbrook to give the Mountaineers a 6-4 lead. One batter later, Hector Crespo ripped another 1-1 pitch from Gilliam through the left side of the infield to bring Gabe Dimock(Grimsley HS) home from third and stretch the advantage to 7-4.
