NCCSIA Announces 2012-13 North Carolina University Division All-State Men’s Basketball Team

The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2012-13 University Division All-State men’s basketball team on Friday. Ten players representing eight different North Carolina Universities were named to the 2012-13 NCCSIA University Division All-State Teams.

The five players that were voted first-team NCCSIA All-State hail from five different schools. The first-team consists of three seniors, one junior and one redshirt freshman.

Senior forward Jeremy Atkinson from UNC Asheville earned first-team All-Big South honors after averaging 17.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Atkinson, who led UNC Asheville in scoring and rebounding, scored in double-figures in 31 of UNC Asheville’s 32 games. He scored a career-high 31 points in UNC Asheville’s 72-65 upset win at St. John’s.

Senior forward Keith Rendleman from UNC Wilmington was a two-time first-team All-CAA selection. Rendleman was named first-team All-District 10 by the NABC as well as earning Mid-Major All-American honors. He became the first player in UNC Wilmington history to average a double-double in consecutive seasons after averaging 17.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game last season. He recorded an NCAA-leading 20 double-doubles this past season.

Junior guard Trevis Simpson from UNC Greensboro was named first-team All-Southern Conference after leading the league in scoring for a second-straight season at 18.7 points per game. Simpson, who recorded 27 double-figure scoring games, ranked 33rd in the nation in scoring.

Redshirt-freshman forward John Brown from High Point was named Big South Conference Freshman of the Year. Brown, who averaged 16.4 points per game, became only the second freshman ever named first-team All-Big South. He scored in double-figures 25 times while scoring at least 20 points 12 times.

Rounding out the first-team is senior forward Maurice Kemp from East Carolina who became the first player in East Carolina history to be named first-team All-Conference USA. He was named MVP of the 2013 College Insiders.com Tournament (CIT) after leading the Pirates to the CIT title. Kemp averaged 18.9 points and 8.0 rebounds per game last season.

The NCCSIA All-State second-team is comprised of Elon’s Lucas Troutman, North Carolina Central’s Stanton Kidd and Jeremy Ingram, High Point’s Alan Chaney and Western Carolina’s Trey Sumler.

Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.

Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.

NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
