NCCSIA Announces 2013 North Carolina University Division All-State Baseball Teams

The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2013 University Division All-State Baseball Teams on Wednesday. Twenty-seven players representing eight different North Carolina Universities were named to the 2013 NCCSIA University Division All-State Teams.

Big South regular-season champion Campbell led all teams with seven players selected to the first-team. East Carolina, Western Carolina, Elon, North Carolina A&T, UNC Greensboro and Charlotte each had one first-team selection.

The Campbell duo of Heath Bowers and Ryan Mattes claimed the two starting pitcher spots in the first-team. Bowers finished with a 9-0 record and a 1.96 ERA in his sophomore season. He was named second-team All-Big South. Mattes, a senior, was named first-team All-Big South after finishing 2013 with an 8-3 record and a 1.94 ERA.

Campbell junior Ryan Thompson is the third Camel selection and one of two relief pitchers on the first-team along with East Carolina’s Drew Reynolds. Thompson was named the Big South Pitcher of the Year and a member of the All-Big South first-team. He was also named a second-team Louisville Slugger All-American. Thompson finished 2013 with a 9-1 record, 10 saves and a 0.88 ERA. Reynolds was named second-team Louisville Slugger All-American and first-team All-Conference USA. He finished tied for first in C-USA with 14 saves and had a 3-2 record with a 2.92 ERA. Reynolds was also named second-team All-State at designated hitter.

Senior Micheal DeLucia was named first-team catcher, making him the fourth Campbell selection. DeLucia hit .316 with 30 RBI and was a member of the Johnny Bench Watch List. He posted 15 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games.

The NCCSIA first-team infield is comprised of players from four different schools in Campbell’s Michael Felton, Western Carolina’s Tyler White, Elon’s Ryan Kinsella and North Carolina A&T’s Kelvin Freeman.

Felton was named first-team All-Big South after finishing his senior season with a .371 average, 49 runs scored and 53 RBI. White was the Southern Conference Player of the year by the media and was named first-team All-Southern Conference at third base. The senior hit .363 with 52 RBI and 66 RBI and was named a third-team Louisville Slugger All-American.

Kinsella is a third-team All-American, was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year by the coaches and was a member of the first-team All-Southern Conference. The junior hit .313 and finished second in the nation in both home runs (21) and RBI (78). Freeman was the MEAC Player of the Year and a third-team Louisville Slugger All-American. He hit .342 with 16 home runs, 59 RBI and 43 runs scored. Freeman led the MEAC in home runs, RBI and total bases.

The NCCSIA first-team outfield includes UNC Greensboro’s Christian Wolfe, Campbell’s Ben McQuown and Charlotte’s Justin Seager. Wolfe was named a second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association and a third-team Louisville Slugger All-American. He posted the second-best batting average in the country at .421 with 47 runs scored and 39 RBI. McQuown was named a second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association and a third-team All-American by Baseball America. He was named first-team All-Big South and led the nation with 54 steals. He finished the season hitting .329 with 65 runs scored and 30 RBI. Seager was the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference member. The junior hit .351 with 46 runs scored and 40 RBI.

Senior David Olson was named to the first-team at designated hitter and is the seventh and final member selection from Campbell. He was named second-team All-Big South and is a John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year finalist. He finished the season hitting .347 with 45 runs scored and 37 RBI.

The NCCSIA All-State second-team is comprised of Western Carolina’s Jeremy Null, Preston Hatcher, Aaron Attaway and Julian Ridings, High Point’s Joe Goodman, Josh Spano and Ryan Retz, Campbell’s Brent Graham and Clayton Brown, East Carolina’s Chase McDonald and Drew Reynolds, Charlotte’s Brock Hudgens, Elon’s Alex Swim and North Carolina A&T’s Luke Tendler.

Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.

Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.

NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
