Kevin Callahan, Former SEG(Southeast Guilford HS) Baseball Coach, Passed Away late Saturday/early Sunday

Kevin Callahan recently retired from the Guilford County School System. He passed away Saturday night from complications from a blood clot.

He served as head Baseball Coach at Southeast Guilford High School for several years.

Kevin led his Southeast Guilford Falcons to the State 4-A Championship Seires in 2001, at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. The Falcons fell to Lee County, two-games-to-one and SEG was led by pitchers Mike McClain Jr. and Toby Middleton…It was one heck of a series and hit on Memorial Weekend of 2001….We broadcast all of the games from Mudcats’ Stadium in Zebulon, on 1470AM radio….

Kevin also coached Palomino Baseball in the Bob Doss era and he took a team to the World Series and I believe it was the Perry and Turner Trucking team and this was probably back around 1989-1990…I still remember when his team beat a team out of Dallas and we ran the headline in the Palomino Post newsletter that came out each day of the World Series and the headline read “P&T Trucking heads off ‘Big D’ Dallas at the Truckstop”….Kevin’s team loved it, but the team out of Dallas was not too happy about it…

Kevin’s son Taylor Callahan played high school baseball at Southeast Guilford and just kept on growing and getting better and better, right up through his senior year of high school…Kevin was very proud of Taylor and how hard he had worked to get better at his game…Taylor will be a sophomore at UNC-Charlotte this fall and Kevin already had his football season tickets for 49er’s football for 2013…He was looking forward to attending those game…

Cal just retired from Southeast Guilford High School, where he was a teacher and a coach for over 30 years…He just completed his last day of service for the Guiford County School, about 3 weeks ago…Kevin had gone to work full-time for Graham Sporting Goods in the outside sales department and he was really looking forward to this new chapter in his life…Just saw Kevin at Graham’s about a week and a-half ago…

Kevin’s brother David is a former teacher and girls basketball coach at Dudley High School and did a good job there back in the late 70’s/early 80’s….Kevin may have had another brother named Mike, but I will have to check on that one….

Thanks to Don Moore for getting this post started and I just back from church this morning and said a prayer for Kevin Callahan and his family and I hope you will find the time to do the same today..

Some great times with Kevin Callahan and the SEG Falcon Family over the years and please remember Kevin’s wife, his son Taylor and there were two daughters too(Ryan and Lindsaey and let’s keep all of them in our thoughts and prayers today and remember his extended family, brother David and other family members and all of his friends and associates at Graham Sporting Goods…

Thank-you for the memories Kevin Callhan, you are being missed by many on this Sunday already, and you have only been gone a few hours..

RIP Kevin Callahan per Andy Durham and GreensboroSports.com….Kevin really enjoyed this site and always told me he was able to pick up a lot of useful information here.

*****Our condolences to his family and the SEG School community.*****

  1. I am just in shock as well as of the SE baseball family that I have talked to today with the news of coach’s passing. Coach was a big influence on me and the profession that I chose to do, it will be strange not being able to call and talk about ball with him, I enjoyed the days of playing for him and then when I was coaching with him, he was a great friend to me and my prayers will be with his family. He had 2 daughters ( Ryan and Lindsaey) along with his son Taylor.

  2. I am so sorry and shocked to hear this. Kevin is such a nice guy and an excellent coach. I do know both of his brothers David and Mike. Both of the brothers coached Women’s Basketball at Dudley. Mike took over for David quite a while back.

  3. I got to know coach Callahan over the past couple of years with his work at Graham Sporting Goods and really enjoyed talking with him. I have a lot of respect for him and I know he will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

  4. Sad news for a great man and teacher both on the field and off. I enjoyed playing for and coaching with him while in Greensboro.

Prayers for the family and rest assured a hit and run is in play somewhere in heaven.

  5. Kevin was a good husband, a good father and a good friend. He will truly be missed. We all had a lot of respect for Kevin.
Our prayers are with Carol, Ryan, Lindsay and Taylor.

  6. We have seen or heard about any of the funeral arrangements yet, for Coach Kevin Callahan….

When we do, we will be sure and post them…

  7. Coach, you will be missed. I always knew when I walked up to you that in a few minutes you and I would be laughing about something. I am so glad I knew you.

  8. Coach, your first year at Southeast you were our tennis coach. You trained us like we were a baseball team. You set up garbage cans for the first practice. We soon understood why. You always said that we may not be the best team as far as our tennis skills were concerned, but we were going to be in great shape and we would be able to always get to the ball. You have been a blessing to so many!!! Our prayers go out to your entire family. You impact and your legacy continues on in the hearts and souls of your former students and players. God bless you always!!!

  9. Hey everyone,

Kathleen Callahan here, Kevin’s niece and goddaughter. We are appreciative of your thoughts and memories here. My father, Mike, coached womens basketball and taught history at Dudley for 27 years, and his brother, David, also coached women’s basketball and taught at Dudley for four years in the 70s. Kevin’s also has 2 sisters, Maureen and Terry. Kevin and Maureen graduated from Dudley after moving from Mass.

Funeral will be at 4pm on Thursday as well as a Visitation on Wednesday night at their church from 6-8 at Alamance Presbyterian Church.

We appreciate all your comments, I will try to keep track of them to share with the family. If you have any stories or comments you would like to share – please do so and feel free to email me if you’d rather(katwolf21@gmail.com), our family will be celebrating his life and legacy as a teacher, coach and mentor. He lives on in every single baseball player he coached and student he taught along with anyone he interacted with.

  10. I may be wrong, but I think one of those Callahan girls was a very good guard for Southeast Guilford girls basketball….

  11. So sorry for the sad news , he was a great coach! I was there with him in his early years at Southeast Guilford! He was not only a great coach but a great person! He will be missed by many! My heart goes out to his family at this time. May you find peace and comfort.

  12. I ran cross country at Southeast, under Coach Callahan from 1987-1991. Running on his team made such a difference for me-I was new and didn’t know many people at school. He and his team gave me a family. When my mom couldn’t pick me up after practice, he’d drive me home in his little car. I had to sit in the back seat wedged between the two carseats. He even ran with us on the course at Hagan Stone Park. My best memories of that time in my life are centered around running cross country. My heart is with his family.

  13. R.I.P. Coach… make sure you tell my dad to run some polls up there in Heaven. You were always a class act on and off the field. You will be missed, but not forgotten.

    Mike Frye

  14. I have so many great memories playing baseball at Southeast under Coach Callahan. He was not only a great Coach but also a great friend and mentor to many. You will for sure be missed but never forgotten.

  15. I had the honor of coaching against and then being able to coach players that came from under coach Callahan and know first hand the great caring, teaching baseball man he was and the example he set and lived. Baseball lost a good one! My family’s hearts go out to the community and his family! He will truly be missed!

  16. Excellent turnout in honor of Coach Kevin Callahan at Alamance Presbyterian Church tonight…

Students, family, friends and just a great gathering….

We had some rain but there was enough cover and it seemed like when you had to go out in it, the rain would let up….

Glad I made the treck donw Alamance Church after the Hoppers’ game and it was good to see all of the support out there tonight for Coach Callahan’s family…..Huge turnout and that should be expected, considering all of the people that hed came in contact with during his teacing and coaching years at Southeast Guilford High School…..
