REGISTER WINS AT IZOD AJGA CHAMPIONSHIP
Li takes Girls Division title on fifth playoff hole at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. — William Register of Burlington, N.C., captured his second AJGA win after a sudden-death playoff against Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock, Pa. In the Girls Division, Marianne Li of Bellevue, Wash., made par on the fifth hole of a sudden-death playoff against Alice Chen of Princeton, N.J.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the IZOD AJGA Championship was a 54-hole stroke play competition on the par-72 Players Course at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center. The event featured 57 boys and 21 girls, ages 15-18, from 19 states and four countries. The Boys Division played the course at 7,045 yards, while the Girls Division played the course at 6,151 yards.

Register carded a final-round 4-under-par 68 that gave him a tournament total of 14-under-par 202 which forced a playoff with Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock, Pa. The playoff started out with both players in good position on the fairway of No. 9.

“We went to the playoff and I hit it down the right side of the fairway, after Brett stuck it close I just wanted to make par,” said Register. “I knew I needed a hard short iron onto the green and from there I sunk a 30 footer for birdie.”

The win is Register’s second AJGA title, and he is looking forward to his last AJGA event of the season.

“With this win I definitely have momentum going into Junior PLAYERS which is in two weeks,” said Register.

Finishing second after one playoff hole was Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock, Pa. In third at 13-under-par 203 was Alex Smalley of Wake Forest, N.C. In a two-way tie for fourth at 9-under-par 207 were Thomas Walsh of High Point, N.C., and Kendrick Vinar of Hillsborough, N.C.

In the Girls Division, Li and Chen made par on No. 18 for tournament totals of 3-under-par 213. From there, their five hole sudden-death playoff began.

“When the playoff began it was like how I prepare for any other tournament, I play one shot at a time, and see where it goes from there,” said Li. “I had to be patient with myself, because you never really know how a playoff will go.”

With this being her second AJGA career title, Li is looking forward to next week’s tournament where she is the defending champion.

Alice Chen of Princeton, N.J., finished second. Katharine Patrick of West University Place, Texas, finished in third at even-par 216.
