College Volleyball Results – Guilford Goes 1-1 on First Day of Greensboro Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Greensboro College Invitational Saturday. The Quakers pulled out a 3-2 win over the host Pride in the opening match, but fell to William Peace University, 3-1, in their second contest.

The Quakers (2-4) dropped a 3-1 decision to Greensboro last Sunday at the Averett Cougar Classic, but evened the season series Saturday thanks in part to 22 kills and 13 digs by senior Brittany Freeman. The Quakers won, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 15-25, 15-6. Freeman had six kills on nine attempts (.556) in the decisive fifth set and hit .352 for the match. Sophomore Kelsey Ruehling contributed 12 kills, 14 digs and three blocks and Malikah French chipped in with 11 kills and a match-high seven blocks. Senior Taylor Whitley set up 42 of Guilford’s assists and added nine digs, four service aces and two blocks.

Liz Widenhouse led the Pride (2-4) with 18 kills and 16 digs. Setter Cortland Phillips also had a double-double with 38 assists and 12 digs.

Megan Mansfield’s match-best 19 kills on .469 hitting powered William Peace to a 25-12, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16 win in Guilford’s second match of the day. Liana Solomon totaled six putaways, 37 kills and served up four of the Pacers’ (5-1) 10 aces in the match.

Freeman led Guilford with 11 kills and sophomore Jessica Patrick added a career-high six on .357 hitting. Ruehling finished with nine kills and nine digs. Senior Meredith Foscue picked up a team-high 12 digs.

Guilford wraps up play in the four-team tournament Sunday (9/8) versus Agnes Scott College at 10:00 a.m. and Roanoke College at 4:00 p.m. in Hanes Gym on Greensboro’s campus.
